Tobacco becomes a la mode

Tobacco: By the 17th C Tobacco was the new wonder crop in Asia and smoking the new fashion world wide. Tobacco smoking was introduced into India from America by the Spaniards around 1528. In about 1604 an emissary of Emperor Akbar  wrote: “In  Bijapur I found some tobacco. Never having seen the like in India, I brought some with me and prepared a handsome pipe of jewelled work”. Akbar’s son, Jahangir, banned smoking in his presence. The bowl is dated 1700, the stand 1798 and the stand about 40 cms tall and the bowl 19 cms.
